Frequently Asked Questions About Sharps Disposal Container
Proper disposal of sharps and regulated medical waste is important for safety, compliance, and public health. Below are answers to common questions about sharps containers, mail-back disposal systems, and safe handling of medical waste.
What goes into smaller collection containers vs. larger collection container systems?
Individual sharps such as needles, lancets, syringes, and other sharp medical items should be placed into smaller FDA-approved sharps containers.
Sharps containers 3 gallons and smaller are designed to safely store loose sharps.
Collection container systems larger than 3 gallons are not designed to hold loose sharps. Instead, they are designed to store and ship multiple smaller sharps containers that have already been sealed.
To use these larger systems properly:
-
Place loose sharps into a sharps container that is 3 gallons or smaller.
-
Seal the sharps container according to the instructions.
-
Place the sealed container inside the larger collection container system for return and disposal.
This process helps ensure safe handling and regulatory compliance during transport and treatment.
Is there a weight limit for collection container systems?
Yes. All sharps collection container systems have maximum weight limits, which are printed on the front of the return shipping box.
If a system exceeds the listed weight limit, additional shipping or disposal fees may apply.
Weight limits help ensure safe transport and proper processing of medical waste.
I purchased a multi-pack system. Can I return one container at a time?
No. Multi-pack systems must be returned as a complete system.
All containers included in the multi-pack should be filled and sealed before shipping the system back for treatment and disposal.
If you are unsure how long sharps waste can be stored onsite before returning your system, we recommend reviewing local waste storage regulations or contacting our support team.
Can liquids be placed inside sharps containers?
Yes, but liquids must be very limited.
Collection containers may hold up to 50 ml (1.69 oz) of liquid per container.
Containers should not be used to dispose of large amounts of liquid medical waste.
I already have filled sharps containers. Can they be shipped using a collection system?
Yes.
If you already have sealed sharps containers, they can be placed inside one of our larger collection container systems (5-, 8-, or 18-gallon systems) for disposal.
Important:
All sharps must already be secured inside FDA-approved sharps containers before being placed in the larger system.
Loose sharps cannot be placed directly into these larger containers.
Can larger collection systems hold different sizes of sharps containers?
Yes.
Collection container systems larger than 3 gallons can hold a variety of smaller sharps containers.
Examples include:
-
1 quart sharps containers
-
1 gallon sharps containers
-
2 gallon sharps containers
-
3 gallon sharps containers
As long as the sharps containers are FDA-approved and properly sealed, they may be placed into the larger system for shipment.
Where should I place the tracking manifest before shipping?
Do not place the manifest inside the shipping box.
Each collection container system includes a plastic pouch labeled “Tracking Manifest” on the outside of the shipping box.
Place the manifest inside that pouch before shipping so it can be scanned and tracked during transportation and disposal.
What if I cannot find the original return shipping box?
If the original shipping box is lost or damaged, please contact our team to request a replacement return box.
Using the correct shipping container helps ensure the system meets transportation and regulatory requirements.
Does the prepaid return shipping label expire?
No.
Prepaid return shipping labels included with our sharps container systems do not expire.
However, regulations regarding how long medical waste can be stored before disposal vary by state, so it is recommended to review your local regulations.
